- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, finely chopped
- 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup whole milk
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
- Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering.
- Add the chopped onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and pork, break it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
- Pour in red wine and let simmer for about 10 minutes until it reduces slightly.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, and basil. Season generously with salt and pepper.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
- After 4 hours, stir in whole milk and cook for another 30 minutes.
- Serve over pasta, garnished with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese if desired.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, consider adding a bay leaf during simmering. You can also experiment with different herbs or add pancetta for extra richness.
