Description

A comforting Italian dish with creamy textures and rich flavors that combines fluffy gnocchi with a silky tomato basil sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
  • 1 small Yellow Onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (optional)
  • Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, plus more for serving
  • 1 (16-ounce) package Potato Gnocchi
  • 1/2 cup Fresh Basil Leaves, chiffonade

Instructions

  1. Sauté the aromatics: Place a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the olive oil and butter. Once the butter has melted, add the finely chopped onion. Sauté for 4-5 minutes, until translucent.
  2. Add garlic and herbs: Add the minced garlic, dried oregano, and optional red pepper flakes. Cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Create the tomato base: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add optional sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Boil the gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to package directions until they float.
  5. Incorporate cream and cheese: Stir the heavy cream and grated Parmesan cheese into the sauce until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes creamy.
  6. Combine gnocchi and sauce: Transfer cooked gnocchi to the skillet with the sauce, allowing some cooking water to help the sauce adhere.
  7. Final touches: Gently stir in freshly sliced basil and remove the skillet from heat.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Divide among bowls, garnish with extra Parmesan and basil, and enjoy warm.

Notes

Pairs well with a simple side salad or garlic bread. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
