Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
- 1 small Yellow Onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 (28-ounce) can Crushed Tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (optional)
- Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
- 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, plus more for serving
- 1 (16-ounce) package Potato Gnocchi
- 1/2 cup Fresh Basil Leaves, chiffonade
Instructions
- Sauté the aromatics: Place a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the olive oil and butter. Once the butter has melted, add the finely chopped onion. Sauté for 4-5 minutes, until translucent.
- Add garlic and herbs: Add the minced garlic, dried oregano, and optional red pepper flakes. Cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
- Create the tomato base: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add optional sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook for 10-15 minutes.
- Boil the gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to package directions until they float.
- Incorporate cream and cheese: Stir the heavy cream and grated Parmesan cheese into the sauce until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes creamy.
- Combine gnocchi and sauce: Transfer cooked gnocchi to the skillet with the sauce, allowing some cooking water to help the sauce adhere.
- Final touches: Gently stir in freshly sliced basil and remove the skillet from heat.
- Serve and enjoy: Divide among bowls, garnish with extra Parmesan and basil, and enjoy warm.
