- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Cream cheese frosting (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Whisk until evenly mixed.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, red food coloring, and melted butter.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently to form a soft dough.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the dough, leaving a border.
- Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 even pieces.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until puffed and a skewer comes out clean.
- While warm, generously spread cream cheese frosting on top.
Notes
For a vegan option, substitute buttermilk with almond milk and vinegar, and replace the egg with flaxseed mixture.
