- 4 large turnips
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1/2 pound ground beef or sausage
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 cup grated cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking these delicious stuffed turnips.
- Cut the tops off the turnips and scoop out the insides to create bowls, leaving about 1/4 inch of flesh for structure.
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until they are fragrant and softened.
- Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet and cook until browned.
- Stir in the cooked rice, salt, pepper, and thyme until well combined.
- Carefully stuff each hollowed turnip with the meat and rice mixture, packing it tightly.
- If desired, sprinkle grated cheese on top of the filling.
- Place the stuffed turnips in a baking dish and add a little water to the bottom of the dish.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
- Once cooked, serve warm.
Notes
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
