Description

A cozy recipe for stuffed turnips filled with ground meat, rice, and spices, perfect for winter gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large turnips
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 pound ground beef or sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking these delicious stuffed turnips.
  2. Cut the tops off the turnips and scoop out the insides to create bowls, leaving about 1/4 inch of flesh for structure.
  3. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until they are fragrant and softened.
  4. Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in the cooked rice, salt, pepper, and thyme until well combined.
  6. Carefully stuff each hollowed turnip with the meat and rice mixture, packing it tightly.
  7. If desired, sprinkle grated cheese on top of the filling.
  8. Place the stuffed turnips in a baking dish and add a little water to the bottom of the dish.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
  11. Once cooked, serve warm.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
