Description

A delightful dessert that combines the rich flavors of chocolate and creamy vanilla in a fun poke cake format.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Mix the vanilla cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake the cake according to the package instructions or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely.
  4. Prepare the custard filling. In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and butter. Let it cool.
  5. Poke holes all over the top of the cooled cake using a fork. Pour the custard filling over the cake, ensuring it fills the holes.
  6. Heat the heavy cream in a saucepan until it starts to simmer. Pour it over the chocolate chips in a bowl and let it sit for a few minutes. Stir until smooth.
  7. Pour the ganache over the custard-covered cake, spreading it evenly. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 120 minutes before serving.

Notes

Make sure the cake is completely cool before poking holes and adding the custard. This helps keep the filling from leaking out. Adjust the sweetness of the ganache by using more or less chocolate.
