Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups penne pasta
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the ground beef or lamb with the chopped onion and minced garlic until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- Cook the penne pasta according to package instructions; drain and set aside.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the milk slowly, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, then stir in the nutmeg, Parmesan cheese, and beaten egg.
- Layer half of the pasta in a greased baking dish, followed by the meat sauce, and then the remaining pasta. Pour the cheese sauce over the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, add chopped olives or feta cheese to the meat sauce. You can substitute different types of pasta, such as ziti or rigatoni, for penne if preferred.
