Description

American goulash is a comforting, one-pot meal combining savory flavors and satisfying ingredients, perfect for busy weeknights and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes (1 can)
  • 15 oz tomato sauce (1 can)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 bay leaves (remove before serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart. Cook for 7–8 minutes until browned. Drain most of the fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper; cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  4. Stir in the paprika and Italian seasoning.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, uncooked macaroni, bay leaves, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15–18 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Cook until the pasta is tender and the sauce thickens. Remove bay leaves, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
  8. For a creamy finish, stir in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese.

Notes

For added flavor, sauté some chopped mushrooms or spinach with the onions and bell peppers. Adjust spices to taste.
