Delicious thick corn tortillas filled with cheese and various ingredients, a taste of Salvadoran culture.
Ingredients

- 2 cups masa harina corn flour
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shredded cheese (quesillo/oaxaca, mozzarella, or white cheddar)
- to taste Vegetable oil (for cooking)
- Curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) (for serving)
- Optional fillings: Refried beans, cooked and seasoned ground meat (pork, beef, or chicken)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix masa harina and salt.
- Gradually add warm water to the mix. Stir until the dough is soft and pliable.
- Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.
- Flatten each ball into a disk using your hands or a flat surface.
- In the center of each disk, add your choice of cheese and any optional fillings.
- Fold the dough over the filling and seal it, forming a filled disk.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a bit of vegetable oil.
- Cook each pupusa for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Serve pupusas warm with curtido on the side. Enjoy with salsa for an extra kick!
Notes
Make sure your dough is not too dry or too sticky and experiment with different fillings. Cook on medium heat for best results.
